From the Edinburgh City Art Center, learn how to weave your own tartan with this fun Kid's Craft!
We've been doing this at festivals with great success!
Supplies Needed:
- Colorful paper or cardstock (various colors for the tartan pattern)
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue
- Optional: thin decorative strips of special papers
Instructions:
- Prepare the Paper Strips:
- Using a ruler, measure and cut strips of colorful paper into equal widths (about 1 inch wide). The length can vary depending on how large you want the weaving.
- Creating the Loom:
- Take one piece of stock paper and fold in half. Draw one horizontal lines an inch down from teh top. Next draw vertical lines starting from the horizontal line - evenly spaced across the width (around 1-inch apart).
- Cut slits along the vertical lines stoping at the horizontal line.
- open the paper to the full size to start the weaving.
- Weaving:
- Begin by placing your color strips of paper through the slits of the main stock paper, alternating over and under as you go. Secure the ends with glue on the back side.
- Once you finish the vertical strips, you can add special smaller papers on top for a special touch.
- Secure the Weaving:
- After you complete the weaving, you can use a bit of glue to secure the ends of the strips on the backside to prevent them from slipping.
- Name it:
- You can name your specialized tartan design anything you want!
