The First People in Scotland
12,000 BC – The first people arrived in Scotland. They were hunters who moved around looking for food. They lived in caves and used simple tools made of stone.
4000 BC
4000 BC – People started farming! They grew crops, kept animals, and built houses.
2500 BC
2500 BC – The Bronze Age began. People learned how to make things from metal, like tools and jewelry.
700 BC
700 BC – The Iron Age started. People built strong forts to protect their villages.
AD 79
The Romans Come to Scotland
– The Romans came to Britain and tried to take over Scotland. The Scottish tribes, called the Caledonians and Picts, fought back.
AD 122
AD 122 – The Romans built Hadrian’s Wall to keep the Scots out of England.
AD 300
AD 300 – Christianity came to Scotland. A monk named Columba brought the new religion.
AD 800
AD 800 – The Vikings arrived! They settled in parts of Scotland, especially in the north and west.

Scotland's Kings and Battles
1040 – A king named Macbeth ruled Scotland. (Yes! Just like in Shakespeare’s play!)
1297
1297 – William Wallace led the Scots against the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. He became a hero!
1306
1306 – Robert the Bruce became King of Scotland.

1314 – The Scots, led by Robert the Bruce, won the Battle of Bannockburn against the English. Scotland became independent.
1542
Famous Queen and the Jacobites
1542 – Mary, Queen of Scots became queen when she was just 6 days old! She later had many problems with England’s Queen Elizabeth I and was executed in 1587.
1603
1603 – James VI of Scotland became the King of England too! This was called the Union of the Crowns.
1689-1746
1689-1746 – The Jacobites wanted to bring back King James VII and fought many battles. The last battle, Culloden in 1746, ended their hopes.
1750-1800s
Scotland changing the world!
1750-1800s – Scotland became a leader in science and inventions. The Age of Enlightenment brought smart people like Robert Burns (poet), Sir Walter Scott (writer), and Adam Smith (economist).
